1. Pleasure Mouse looks forward to the visit from the footbinder right up until the big moment. Along the way she visits a number of characters who develop various ironies for the reader. Choose one of these characters and explain how his/her scene with Pleasure Mouse is ironic.
2. Who do you blame more for the footbinding--Pleasure Mouse's mother or father. Why?

a) When Pleasure Mouse comes upon fen-wen she tells him of the foot-binding she will be having done. when he is told this, he becomes sad because, with foot-binding, you cannot run or walk very far. This is ironic because Pleasure Mouse was running all over the place, but won' be able to for much longer.
b) I blame her mother for the foot-binding. She pressured Pleasure Mouse into it by noting if you have small feet, you will marry well. Her father on the other hand has the thought of 'why put yourself through that pain.' Therefore, Pleasure Mouse's mother is to blame for keeping up this horrible tradition of foot-binding.
a).I think her encounter with the artisan, Fen Wen. Pleasure Mouse joyously dances around with the news on the arrival of the footbinder, and couldn’t be happier when she tells him of this news. Fen Wen on the other hand, breaks down and cries; as he is aged and experience, knows the consequences and the pain the girls have to go through for this torture. She is naïve and has been brainwashed to think that the foot binding experience will make her a ‘grown women’ and solve all her problems. This relationship between Fen Wen and Pleasure Mouse develops an irony as she did not foresee that she will no longer be able to run or walk to the Meadow of One Hundred Orchids to greet her ‘father’. Pleasure Mouse, in self assurance alsays says ‘They cannot run, but I can’, something that she will probably regret ever saying.
b).I personally blame the parents equally. The mother may have been the one to have pushed Pleasure Mouse and intimidate her into the matter, but she is one who has been through the pain before, and knows how important it is for society. The mother herself, probably had parents who were the same, she didn’t want to experience the pain of binding her own daughter, so has hired someone to do it after. She only acts uncaringly, because the mother knows that if she were to break down and show her weakness, she would only be ‘harming’ her daughter instead of protecting her. Ironically. The father, even if he shows sympathy towards her, has no intention of stopping the wife from performing the torture on their daughter. He was after the master of the house, if he truly believed that what they were doing was wrong, he would have put an end to it. However, he merely walks away after making a sympathetic statement.
A) The scene with Fen-Wen is most ironic to me. Pleasure Mouse goes to him, and dances happily around him. Pleasure Mouse is quite excited of getting her feet bound, because it how she becomes a women. However, Fen-Wen is the first person to tell Pleasure Mouse the truth. She had no idea that it would hurt for about 2 years or that she wouldn't be able to walk far at all or run. This is ironic because it's the first time Pleasure Mouse realizes that there will be a lot of pain, which makes her feel more frightened then happy.
B) The person I blame for the foot-binding of Pleasure Mouse is her mother. At such a young age Pleasure Mouse would not be able to make a decision such as this one on her own. She also let Pleasure Mouse know that in order to marry well and step into women hood your feet must be bound. On the other hand her father doesn't understand why women keep putting themselves through so much pain. He thinks if one person doesn't get their feet bound then many others won't get theirs done either. Therefore, everyone will have normal sized feet and there won't be any other option.
A. The scene that struct me to be the most ironic was when Pleasure Mouse runs out to visit Fen-Wen. She visits Fen-Wen in a rather excited mood to tell about her foot-binding coming up. Quickly her happiness turns to confussion. She finds out that due to the foot-binding it will be very difficult for her to walk. She will only be able to go very short distances, therefore visiting him will be very limited. This scene is so ironic because she is moving about very excitingly but soon enough she will barly be able to walk let alone move around constantly.
B. I would blame Pleasure Mouse's mother more for the foot-binding because she has the impression in Pleasure Mouse's head that in order to marry well you must have these very tiny feet. Her mother is also to blame for not trying to stop this viscious cycle that she endured as well. Why put you're self through so much pain and agony. Try to make a difference and change something that is painful for all women physically and mentally.
a) I think that her encounter with Fen-Wen was the most Ironic. After she excitedly told him that the foot-binder was coming the next day he was deeply saddened. He was deeply saddened because he knew, and he told her, that after the procedure, she wouldn't be able to run or even walk very far. Ironically after she talked to him, she ran to a family friend's house for salvation.
b) I blame both of the parents. Although this procedure was a long tradition, the father makes the suggestion that maybe she could be the first to start the new style of natural feet. He leaves the decision up to the mother who choses to go through with the procedure. Although she makes the decision making call for the painful procedure, the father should have spoken his mind more freely if he truly believed that it was the right thing to do.
A.) The scene with Pleasure Mouse and Fen-Wen is definitely the most ironic. As soon as Pleasure Mouse hears that the foot-binder is coming tomorrow, she gets very excited. She then runs to tell Fen-Wen on her supposedly 'great' news only to find out the bitter truth. As she is dancing around in happiness with Fen-Wen he begins to tell her of the pain that she will have to endure in the procedure of getting her feet bound. She then hears him tell her about how she will not be able to walk long distances or run. This to me strikes me as ironic due to the fact that Pleasure Mouse ran over to Fen-Wen's house and began jumping for joy, when actually this is one of the last times she will be able to 'jump for joy'.
B.)I believe that Pleasure Mouse's mother is to be blamed for the foot-biding. She filled Pleasure Mouse's mind with ideas of the foot-binding. How having small feet was better, and that if you had small feet you could marry well. I find it funny that Pleasure Mouse's mother, who has been through the pain of foot-binding, still encourages the idea onto her daughter. Pleasure Mouse's mother is definitely the one to blame seeing as she completely pressured her daughter into continuing on the tradition.
when pleasure mouse is on here way she sees the artisan fen-wen and older more experienced man. she dance around him all happy and tells him she is going to get her feet bound up. this is ironic because she came up to him all happy jumping and dancing but when she left she scared, sad and in a though position wondering what she wanted to do.
Both parents are to blame. I believe Mouse's father is more to blame. usually he would make all decisions. he wanted to try a new natural way to raise his daugter but he gave the decision to his wife. then she buckled under social pressure, and took the easy way out. they made the decision to take away their own daughters feet to make her handicapt. this is a life changing decision "she wont be able to run after this". and neither parent takes responsiblity to stand up and save Mouse's feet which she realizes through the story how much she loves them and doesnt want to lose them.
A. I think it when she mets Fen-Wen. As we can see that she is a very hyper person who runs around all time and get excited so easily. She excitely told Fen-Wen about the Footbinder. However Fen-Wen told here that we will never be able to run again which crushed her dream completely. I think that is ironic.
B. I the Lady Guo Guo or the mother is to be blame as she stupidily push her daugther thorugh so much pain and lying to her that "Small feet is the way to go".
a). The character I think ironic with the foot biniding is Lao Bing. Lao Bing is Pleasure Mouse's aunt. When Pleasure Mouse was running down Dragon Way, she runs into her aunt's sedan chair. Her Aunt haults the chair and allows Pleasure Mouse to get in. When she tells her aunt about the foot binding, her aunt rages on about her mother spending money like a "spoiled concubine." While her aunt is in this Sedan Chair that is being carried by her severants. It's ironic because she is saying how her mother spends money foolishly, but so does she.
b). I blame her mother for the foot binding. Her mother clearly knows the pain of the foot binding and i think that is why she hired someone else instead of keeping it traditional. Of course, foot binding will make a good marriage come easier, but her mother could of stopped the tradition.
1. I think that her encounter with Fen Wen was the most ironic. When she goes to tell him her news, she is filled with happiness that she will be getting her feet bound, but Fen Wen is very sad because her feet will not be strong enough to be able to come out and visit him anymore.
2. I blame mother for the footbinding because even though her father was the one who told her mother that they had to be bound, her mother pressured her into it.
A. When Pleasure Mouse encounters Fen Wen and tells him about the foot binding, he informs her that they will not be able to see each other anymore. To get to Fen Wen she must run or walk a good distance and women with their feet bound cannot walk or run long distances. It is ironic how after Pleasure Mouse gets her feet bond she rips of the tiny shoes from the doll Fen Wen gave her and storms away from the temple. She clutches the doll close to her because it is all she has left of Fen Wen.
B. I blame Pleasure Mouse's mother for the binding of her feet. Pleasure Mouse's father told her mother that it was up to her, he didn't care whether her feet were bound or not. Also, Pleasure Mouse is only 6 years old an doesn't have the ability to comprehend or have an say in her foot binding. She is pressured into it by her mother saying that if she has natural feet, she will not marry.
a. When Pleasure Mouse visit with Fen-Wen is the most ironic. Pleasure Mouse runs into Fen-Wen she is all excited for her foot-binding the next day. But her excitement soon dissipates when Fen-Wen tells her the truth about foot-bindig, and how it is going to hurt for a long time.
b. I blame the mother for the foot-binding of Pleasure Mouse. She forced Pleasure Mouse into foot-binding by telling her if she did not have small feet she would not marry well. Pleasure Mouses father on the other-hand opposed the whole ordeal and recognized how painful it was.
A) I think that when Pleasure Mouse meets Fen-Wen, the whole tone of the story changes, along with Pleasure Mouse's view on foot-binding. Before, she was very excited to become a woman, but when she finally found out how painful it was really going to be, she wasn't as excited for it.
B) Although I believe it was both of the parents faults at the same time, I think the mother holds more of the responsibility for influencing Pleasure Mouse to get her feet bound. The mother kept on telling Pleasure Mouse the upsides of getting her feet bound, and never mentioned the negative effects.

One thing that i found that was ironic was that even thought the mother knew how painful and how much she hated it, she still let her daughter have her feet bound. I blame the mother more because she could have stopped it but instead continued the tradition of foot binding in that family.
Pleasure Mouse's encounter with Fen Wen was definitely the most ironic. Pleasure Mouse is all excited to tell her of the Foot Binder, but Fen Wen was saddened by this news because it meant that Pleasure Mouse would not be able to run out and visit him any more. Pleasure Mouse was talking about how excited she was to have her feet bound, and Fen Wen told her how much pain and agony she would suffer because of it.
I think that while, the father had the most control over whether she got her feet bound, that Pleasure Mouse's mother pressured her into it unfairly, and gave her no choice in whether or not she would get her feet bound.
1. Among the various characters who encountered with Pleasure Mouse, I personally think Fen Wen was the most influential, and therefore the most ironic character in this story. Before Pleasure Mouse met Fen Wen, she was rather more excited about having foot bind. However, after having a serious conversation with Fen Wen, she realized that she would no longer be able to run freely and stumble every single time.
2. One of the most ironic and contradictory ideas in this story is that her mother actually didn't bind her daughter's foot. Since she was already acknowledged that how painful to go through the foot binding is, she supposed to against to the idea of foodt bind, or at least, she should bind her daughter by herself. Merely binding her daughter's foot for a marriage purpose, mother pressured Pleasure Mouse into the most illogical tradition.
a) At the beginning of the short story Pleasure mouse is running all over the place and is looking foward to her feet being binded. When she encounters with Fen-wen,Fen-wen says you cannot run after your feet have been binded. This is ironic because at the start of the story she is looking foward to her feet being binded, now that she knows the real meaning she is scared and unsure of herself.
b) I blame the mother more than the father. At such a young age Pleasure mouse could not have made a proper decision for herself. Her mother took advantage of this. I believe Pleasure mouse's mother tricked her by saying you can not marry well unless your feet are binded. Also the mother was trying to make Pleasure mouse fit in with society.
a) Fen-Wen attitude changes when Pleasure Mouse breaks the news that the footbinder is here. Along with the news that the binder is here she also discuss some of the downfalls to have your feet binded. You are not able to walk for to far and you are barely able to run due to the loss of fott circulation.
b) I blame Mother for presurring Pleasure Mouse into doing such a bad thing. The mother tells Pleasure mouse that you marry better and it is a step into woman hood. The mother took advantage of the daughters innocense when she told her that this was a good thing. The father asked the daughter why she would do such a thing to your body but the mother got most of say in what was going on.
a) When Fen Wen comes across Pleasure Mouse to talk about the foot-binding that Fen Wen will receive the next day. Pleasure Mouse talks about how the pain of the foot binding is excruciating and can last up to two years before your foot no longer hurts. She also talks about how she will no longer be able to run, but Pleasure Mouse is running and walking long distances throughout the story.
b) I blame the mother for pressuring her daughter into getting her feet done. The mother tells her child that beauty pays its price and that being pretty hurts. So she told her daughter that if she had small feet that she would marry well.
A. I think that Honey Tongue was a good person to meet with because she did not have her feet bond and she regretted it. Honey Tongue also said that it will hurt only for two years but it will be one of the best thing you can do.
B. I blame both of the parents because the both wanted Pleasure mouse's feet to be bond. Also neither one of them stuck up for Pleasure Mouse.
A. When Pleasure Mouse realizes she has to get her feet bound, Pleasure mouse is really upset because she is very immobile now. She can no longer go and meet her father in the field with bound feet. Pleasure Mouse will soon be able to pick up alot of males.
B. I blame the mother for Pleasure Mouse getting her feet bounded because it is the honor for the mother to bind the daughter's feet. The mother didn't want to bind her daughter's feet, so she hired somebody else to do it for her.
i think the interaction between fen wen and pleasure mouse was very ironic because, she does not know what it really is and she thinks its something that benefit her in her life so she cannot wait to tell him about it. On the other fen wen look at her and thinks she about to tell him something he wants to hear and when she finnaly tells him, the full grown man breaks down and cries, it is ironic she runs everyday to see him and now she wont even able to walk down there. and also because what she thought would be a good turned out to make a grown man cry while she is so happy.
i blame her mom and her sister. I blame her mom because she almost forced her to do it by telling her how she would marry a wealthy man. I feel like she forced her to endure a pain she did not experience. I blame her sister because she did not want to tell how it felt like and she was lying by telling her that it only hurt if you are bad. I also feel like she was selfish by not wanting to tell her just because no one told her how it felt but pleasure moose says she would have told her.
A) The scene with Fen-Wen is the most ironic scene in the story. Pleasure Mouse is excited and joyful about getting her feet bound when in fact she shouldn't be. Fen-Wen's sadness turns Pleasure Mouse's happiness into confusion and disappointment because Pleasure Mouse finally realizes that Foot-binding is not a pleasure filled experience.
B) I blame Pleasure Mouse's mother for the foot-binding. Pleasure Mouse's mother knew all about the pain and still made her daughter feel like everything was going to be fine. Pleasure Mouse's mother spoke about all of the benefits of foot-binding like, marriage, just to make her daughter look forward to something.
from Max:
Pleasure Mouse's interaction with the footbinder herself was the most ironic. This is because the one woman who was causing her the most pain, offered to completly rid her of it and reverse what she had done as if the pain and suffering that she was forced to endure was meaningless.
I blame Pleasure Mouse's father for the foot binding. This is because when the ultimate decision came down to him, he demanded that Pleasure Mouse's mother have Pleasure Mouse's feet bound.
a) when pm talks to her sister about the foot binding the sister does not tell her anything. this is very ironic for when she got her foot bound she was very mad that nobody told her about the pain.
b) i blame the mother for she dident even care enough to do it herself so she got a person witch she paid to break her daughters feet.
