A. Anold Fiend.
B. The new "name" of Arnold Friend spells Anold Fiend. Anold Fiend is actually " An Old Fiend." "Probably the oldest fiend is Satan who walked with hooves as of Arnold." This changes the story for me by showing me what his name represents. How is name is represented in a negative way. The negative way being a devil and his actual motives, which are horrible.
C. After Connie goes off with Arnold Friend she probably gets raped and murdered. An example from the text is there was " so much land that Connie had never seen before and did not recognize except to know that she was going to it."
A. An old Fiend
B. The new name, an old fiend, shows that "arnold friend" was an evil spirit and/or obsessive towards Connie. With this new meaning, the story seems more clear in its darkness. I now see that arnold had been obsessed with Connie for a long time and the story opens to when they first see each other. Then it goes on to when they first speak to each other ending in Connie being abducted.
C. After Connie goes off with Arnold, she is probably taken to where he lives and is raped and murdered. She doesn't recognize her own home or anywhere around it anymore. "Her eyes darted everywhere in the kitchen. She could not remember what it was, this room..."
A. Anold Fiend
B. The new name is Anold Fiend, An old fiend. The word fiend is defined as an evil spirit; demon. This makes sense to me because only an evil person would abduct somebody and do terrible things to them.
C. After Connie goes off with Arnold Friend, she probably gets raped and then murdered. After Arnold said, "...I'll show you what love is like, what it does." there is not one doubt in my mind that Connie was raped and killed.
A. Anold fiend
B. The new name that we get is anold fiend. The words mean an old fiend which would make him an old demon, or evil spirit. This changes the story because it replaces arnold friend to a person which we think of as a demon.
C. After she goes of with him in my mind he rapes her and then murders her. In the story he keeps on repeating words like do not worry and honey. this to me shows that he is trying to cover up his real identity of a rapist. So i believe that he did in fact rape her.
A) Anold Fiend
B) After taking the "R" in each word out Arnold Friends name becomes Anold Fiend. However, this actually turns into an old fiend, which is a evil spirit or demon. This changes the story for me because it makes me know that Arnold Friend is bad. From this meanings you can come to conclusions about the story.
C) After Connie goes off with Arnold Friend, I think she gets raped and murdered. I believe this happens to Connie, because Arnold was threatening to come into the house after her if she called the police. Also, he told her if she didn't go with him than he would hurt her family. This makes me know that he didn't just want to go for a ride with her, because if he did then he wouldn't be threatening and her family.
A.An old Fiend
B.The new name of Arnold Friend, “An old fiend” represents the name of devil. After I realize the meaning of the new name, story becomes more understandable. Connie is fifteen years old teenager who is not very happy at her family. Connie meets Arnold Friend, a stranger who seems to know everything of Connie’s life, and she is overwhelmed by Arnold and his weird behaviors.
C.Arnold brings Connie to another world where Connie never experienced before. It could be either somewhere around utopia or, on the other hand, painful hell. Perhaps, Connie will get raped or murdered by Arnold because he threats Connie and her family. However, as the novel describes that her mother was always nice to Jane, older sister of Connie, and comparing her with Connie by saying “Why don’t you keep your room clean like your sister?” Arnold might take Connie to the place where she can be satisfied and not be compared by her family.
a) An old Fiend
b) The new name, An Old Fiend comes to mean "A person of great wickedness or maliciousness." This essentially shows that "Arnold Friend" was a bad man with an evil spirit. He seeks to bring mayhem onto innocent women. Ever since the beginning of the story when he and Connie met each other, he was obsessed with her and sought her out like a lion hunts its prey. This changes the way I look at the story because it shows that this man/spirit has an extremely malicious intent; one that may inevitably end in death.
c) After Connie goes off with Arnold Friend, she is taken away from her family forever to "So much land that Connie had never seen before and did not recognize except to know that she was going to it." What happens to Connie once she is taken away is that she is raped by Arnold Friend. With his malicious intent in mind, it can be assumed that once Arnold is through with her and has moved onto another 'lover' , she is murdered because he no longer has any need for her.
A. Anold Fiend
B. Arnold Friend's name when the r's are taken out spells out Anold Fiend, or 'An Old Fiend'. This makes the story much clearer seeing as he had a sick obsession with Connie. It also shows the irony of how Arnold's last name is 'Friend' when he is nothing close to that.
C. In my opinion, the events that happen after Connie goes off with Arnold, are not very pleasant. It seems very obvious that she is most likely raped and murdered. An example from the text helps prove the case that he raped Connie, "I'll have my arms tight around you so you won't need to try to get away.."
A. Anold Fiend.
B. The new name "Anold Fiend" is a strong symbol of the devil. Now, after I have learned this new meaning, and related it back to the story, I have a better understanding of the plot. Joyce Carol Oates uses this Arnold Friend as a symbol of the devil, and evil in society. This came as a rude awakening to Connie, as she was losing her innocence, and having the real world revealed before her eyes. This was especially apparent when Arnold drew the imaginary "X" in the air which he called his sign. She was scared by this, and closed the screen door in front of her.
C. After Connie goes out with Arnold and Ellie, I think that she was raped and killed. His intention of doing this became apparent to me in this quote. "I'll always keep my word. I'll tell you how it is, I'm always nice at first, the first time. I'll hold you so tight you won't think you'll have to try to get away or pretend anything because you'll know you can't. And I'll come inside you where it's all secret and you'll give in to me and you'll love me--"
from SANTO:
Anold Fiend
anold fiend= means a demon or evil spirit. Arnolds friend shows these throughout the story by trying to get connie to go with him even though he is an older man. also he makes sense becuase only a demon or the devil would have the idea to rape or kill a fifteen year old girl.
C. Arnolds friend tells her that she needs to leave her house to go with him and he says she would run to him if her house was on fire, also he threatens her by telling her she would not want to put her family in trouble and he makes several refferences to fisically hurting her or family. After connie goes with him it is possible that she is raped and murders by the demon with hooves.
A. An old fiend.
B. When you take out the letter "R" of "Arnold Friend", you get "an old fiend". This new name means "an evil spirt or demon" or "a wicked or cruel person". The new name's negative connotation definitely changes my view on the story. As said below, I definitely believe that a wicked or cruel person would abduct an innocent girl.
C. I think that after Connie goes off, she is presumably raped. He used many terms that could lure a little girl in, like "honey" and then once he gets her, he threatens her like saying he will kill her loved ones.
a. Anold Fiend
b. The new name, Anold fiend means an demon or evil spirit. I can understand this because Arnold was an obssesed with Connie in a bad way and only an evil spirit would abduct someone.
c. I believe that after connie leaves wiht arnold he does in fact rape her and i can see him killing her as a way of being her whole life. When Arnold says, "you wanna come for a ride?" i was just really creeped out from that and it sounded like what a kidnapper would say.
Taking the "R"s out of Arnold Friend, the new name becomes An Old Fiend, refering to Satan. After finding the new name, my view on the story changes. Before I think that Arnold Friend was a crazy and unstable man. But now i think that he is just evil and cruel. After going with Arnold, COnnie is most likely killed by Arnold.
A. Anold Fiend
B. An Old Fiend, which means the devil or a very cruel person. For me this just reinforces that the Arnold Friend is a mean and nasty rapist.
C. When Connie goes off with Arnold and Ellie she is probably raped and then killed. When Arnold was trying to lure Connie out of the house he says "...I'll show you what love is like, what it does." This makes it even more evident that Connie is going to be raped and probably killed or brutalized.
A. Anold Fiend
B. The new name of the man becomes Anold Fiend, or "An Old Fiend." The word fiend means that he is a devilish person or obsessively wants something, which in this case would be Connie
C. After she goes off with Arnold she is probably raped and murdered. You can probably draw this from the fact that he tries to keep her calm and act like they are her age when they are really much older than her. He also gets very nervous when she threatens to call the cops, which tells you that he is definitely up to no good.
A. Anold Fiend
B. The name without the R's is spelled Anold Fiend, which translates to be "an old fiend." This shows something different about the man, it shows you that he is make the girl perceive that he is her friend until he can meet her and really have his way.
C. After Connie goes with Arnold its sad to say but he more than likely had his way with her. After Arnold said, " I'll have my arms tight around you, so you won't need to try to get away and i'll show you what love is like." This shows you that this man is not looking for love, but is looking to rape a younger girl.
A. arnold fiend
B. the new name of arnold friend is actually arnold fiend but if you take off the R's is says " An old fiend"
which represents an old evil person or evil spirit. which makes a lot of sence because of the kind of person arnold is in the book.
C. after connie makes the mistake of going off with arnold she probably gets raped and killed " after arnold say " I'll show you what love is like and what it does" it seem to me like she got raped and murdered.
A. Anold Fiend
B. The "new name" is actually "An old fiend". This makes much more clear the darkness of the story. It shows that Arnold Friend is actually a dark person, similar to a demon or "fiend".
C. After Arnold brings her to this "land that Connie had never seen before and did not recognize except to know that she was going to it", he probably rapes her. After he is done with her, he'll murder her.
A. After taking out both r's the new name is anold fiend.
B. An old friend.
C. Connie went with arnold friend and she would possibly have gotten raped. She also hasn't seen the place they go to. "I'll show you what love is!"
b.a devilish spirit, evil spirited.
Anold Feind
This new name if spaced correctly is "an old feind.'' A feind usually represents evil or a demon. This one in particular represents the devil or Satan. This did not change my outlook on the story because an old man picking up young chicks and taking them away.
After Connie gets picked up by that guy and he threatens her family and knows everything about her, I start to get the feeling that something is happening. Once it says that there was so much land that Connie had never seen I start to think that Connie is not going to see the next morning.
A. Anold Fiend
B. It actually "An Old Fiend" it is define as a devil spirit or something to do with evil. And because of this i may now see that this Anrold guy is a bad man.
C. I belived she will be raped and murdered. "I'll show you what love is like, what it does" is the sentence i pick which show that she got raped. But who knows the guy might change his mind and not murder Connie, Only God know.
A. Anold fiend
B. Arnold's new name changes the way I think about Arnold friend and his character in the story. Because it says "An old fiend" witch means a satan or the devil. this changes the way I look at the story because some of the ways she chose to describe him made him like a devil. Like the way he was almost unsteady in his boots like hooves would be.
C. After Connie is taken away by Arnold friend she is probably raped and killed. There is other evidence in the story she was raped like this quote the Arnold says to Connie "ll show you what love is like, what it does."
A. Anold Fiend
B. An Old Fiend is probably making reference to the fact that Arnold is actioully symbolic of the devil and/or the evil of teenagers actions and views. The change of name in a way, confirmes the feeling that there was something terribly wrong with Arnold and that he is in fact, ill meant.
C. After Connie gives in to go with Arnold, I am confident that she is either, raped or murdered (or both.) Arnold had an eerie tone in the way that he said things, which gives the reader a feeling of condemnation and evil foreshadowing. Connie also realizes this when she looks out upon the land that she did not know, but "was going to it."

A. An old fiend
B. It makes me think that the man Arnold Fiend in the story was a symbol for the devil. There was some kind of weird trait to him that made him interesting in a creepy way and the descriptions of his character seemed surreal and evil like the devil. An old fiend could also mean "old fiend" as in they had known each other for a while. This could have something to do with how Arnold Fiend knew very obscure details of Connie's life as if he had in fact known her for a while
C. Arnold rapes and kills her. He talks of how he will "show her what love feels like." We know he murders her because of the last line of the story where it says she looked to the land that she had never been to but would go to. This means she is going to die and experience some sort of after life.
