Look back through Act 1 and find one passage that you think reveals something about the character's personality/temperament/nature.
Block 5: You get Iago
Block 6: You get Othello
First quote the passage. Then make your point: what quality(ies) does this reveal? Finally explain how and why. You should write a good paragraph, not including the quote itself.

" I do beseech you
Send for the lady to the Sagittary
And let her speak of me before her father.
If you do find me foul in her report,
The trust, the office I do hold of you,
Not only take away, but let your sentence
Even fall upon my life."
This quote is referring to when the Duke is talking to Othello about Desdemona. He is asking if their marriage was forced. Othello responds by saying I love Desdemona so much that if she says I forced marriage upon her that I will die. Literally. By Othello saying this this shows that he his true to himself and he will do anything for something that he strongly believes in and loves.
"Thou art sure of me. Go make money. I have told thee often, and i retell thee again and again, i hate the Moor. My cause is hearted:thine hath no less reason. Let us be conjunctive in our revenge against him. If thou canst cuckold him, thou dost thyself a pleasure, me a sport. There are many events in the womb of time which will be delivered. Traverse! Go, provide thy money."
This quote is pertaining to the section in this scene where Roderigo and Iago come together again to plot against their seemingly common enemy, Othello. It is seen that Iago is manipulative character that does everything for himself, not for anyone else. Clearly, he is allying himself with Roderigo to plot against Othello to bring him down so that Roderigo can get his beloved Desdemona and Iago can seize the enviable position of Othello. This quotation proves how manipulative and scheming Iago is. Also, he is doing this for money, thus winning all around. Therefore, the quality revealed is one of selfishness and the idea of covering for one's own butt, not watching anyone else's back. He is out ONLY for himself!
"Most potent, grave, and reverend signiors,
My very noble and approved good masters,
That I have ta'en away this old man's daughter,
It is most true; true, I have married her:
The very head and front of my offending
Hath this extent, no more. Rude am I in my speech,
And little bless'd with the soft phrase of peace:
For since these arms of mine had seven years' pith,
Till now some nine moons wasted, they have used
Their dearest action in the tented field,
And little of this great world can I speak,
More than pertains to feats of broil and battle,
And therefore little shall I grace my cause
In speaking for myself. Yet, by your gracious patience,
I will a round unvarnish'd tale deliver
Of my whole course of love; what drugs, what charms,
What conjuration and what mighty magic,
For such proceeding I am charged withal,
I won his daughter."
This speech he gives to council shows us that he is a very eloquent speaker and knows how to defend himself not only with his sword but with his words. Through his speech we see signs of humbleness for he says that his speech might not be good because most of his life has been on the battle field, but it turns out that he speaks very well. He shows us that he has much respect for his seigniors and would do whatever they would want him to do. This also says that he is a very strong person and will stand his grown against any opposition and defend himself and his cause.
"Zounds, sir, ... even now, now very now an old black ram is tupping your white ewe.... or else the devil will make a grandsire out of you." pg. 7
This quote reveals that Iago is a racist and is disloyal to Othello. He is racist because he calls Othello a ram and he calls him the devil. A ram is usually modeled as someone bad and violent. He also calls him the devil. In the old church paintings devils were usually black. So just because Othello is black Iago is portraying him as the devil. Also the anger you can hear in his voice really shows the anger that is in him directed at Othello.
Iago is disloyal to him because he is going behind Othello's back and is exagerating to Barbantio about how bad Othello is. He is doing this because he did not get the lieutenant job that Othello gave to someone else. This shows that Iago was never loyal to Othello and he should be watched and could turn on Othello at any second.
In Iago's second passage, on the third page, lines eight to 27, the reader understands Iago's plot and hatred for his master. Also in his last passage (last of the act) he further convinces the reader of his hatred and talks of how he will get his revenge. It is at that point known that Iago acts only for his own benefit and is deffinetly an evil man.
"Hold your hands,
Both you of my inclining and the rest.
Were it my cue to fight, I should have known it
Without a prompter. Where will you that I go
To answer this your charge?
This Is othello speaking to Brabantio about his daughter. It shows that Othello is brave and knows what he is doing. Also that he will do any thing to be with Desdemona.
"I do beseech you,
Send for the lady to the Sagittary,
And let her speak of me before her father:
If you do find me foul in her report,
The trust, the office I do hold of you,
Not only take away, but let your sentence
Even fall upon my life.
This quote is being stated by Othello. He is talking to the Duke about how he did not force Desdemona, they are in love and want to be married. This shows how Othello is not only this tough general, but he has compassion and love for someone. He has so much love for someone that he is trusting them to go against their family in public. Othello is taking a major risk (his life) by having Desdemona chose between him or her father.
"Even now, now, very now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe"
Iago says to Brabantio in the middle of the night to awaken him, and make him aware that his daughter Desdemona has gone off with a black man. This represents Iago's racism, as well as his disloyalty to Othello. He refers to Othello as "a black ram" as if he is not worthy of Desdemona only because he is black. Also, we learn that Iago is not truly loyal to Othello. We know to this point that he is somewhere between Othello's side and Roderigo's, but now we know how far he is willing to go for Roderigo.
" I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs."
This shows that Iago is racist especially when it comes to Othello. He call Othello a Moor and a beast. In order to make a beast you must be one, which is how he is referring to Othello as a beast here. He has no respect for Othello at all. This gives Iago that rude personality, and that personality as if he is above everyone else. This quote also makes me believe Iago is a suck up to Brabantino, because he is a senator. Iago is telling on his daughter, and it was a secret she was trying to keep, so Iago is trying to get on Brabantio's good side.
"My life upon her faith! Honest Iago,
My Desdemona must I leave to thee:
I prithee, let thy wife attend on her:
And bring them after in the best advantage.
Come, Desdemona: I have but an hour
Of love, of worldly matters and direction,
To spend with thee: we must obey the time."
Othello is saying that he knows that Desdemona would never lie to him. This proves that Othello is very trusting of others, which can be a good and bad quality for him to have at the same time. He trusts his friend to stay with her and make sure she is taken care of. He is very caring of his loved ones and wants to make sure that they don't get hurt.
"I am not what I am"
Actually it a very long quotes but I only chose the last part of it. This the quotes in first scene and Iago is talking to Roderigo. This quotes says a lot about Iago. It saying that Iago is a double agent or tratior who ready to work for anyone who is going to benefit him.
"I am one, sir that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs."
This passage is referring to Iago talking to Brabantio about Desdemona and Othello's' relationship. This passage has a high importance because it shows the length at which Iago will go to achieve what he wants. We know that Iago is out for himself and will do pretty much anything to get what he wants. This passage shows how much he wants Brabantio to be mad with Othello so Iago can have control over the army. By making this racist slur to Barbianto, who is a senator shows that he is willing to go pretty far. It takes some guts to talk about a senators daughters sexual life like that.
“Thus do I ever make my fool my purse; for I mine own gained knowledge should profane. If I would time expend with such a snipe. But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor, and it is thought abroad that ‘twixt my sheets ~ Hell and night must bring this monstrous birth to the world’s light.”
This quote is excerpted from the very last scene of the act1. It is one of the most important quotes throughout the act 1, because it not only shows Iago’s deceiving attitude towards everyone including Othello and Roderigo, but also alludes his stealthy and well concealed scheme. Iago seems to be truly worrying about Roderigo, who desperately wants Desdemona, but as we can see from the first sentence, he only uses Roderigo as a ignorant financial supporter and looks down him as a fool. Iago also plans betrayal towards Othello, and tries to get rid of Cassio, who impedes his promotion. The words "Hell and nigh" from the very last sentece of the quote stands for his darkended soul and corrupted conscience.
"My life upon her faith! Honest Iago,
My Desdemona must I leave to thee:
I prithee, let thy wife attend on her:
And bring them after in the best advantage.
Come, Desdemona: I have but an hour
Of love, of worldly matters and direction,
To spend with thee: we must obey the time."
This quote shows that Othello is a trusting man. He is also very loyal. He is trusting and loyal because he trusts Desdemona's faith. If she believes differently than him and she gets hurt upon his journey, then he will be sacrificed. He is loyal to Desdemona's father because he promises to keep his daughter safe.
"Go to; farewell. Put enough money in your purse."
This shows that Iago is truly a greedy person. He keeps telling Rodregio to follow him and that he will help him, but he never really followsa through with helping to the fullest. This makes it so that Rodregio will keep having to come back to him to help and he will have to keep paying him. Iago does this because he is neither on Rodrigos side or Othellos side, he just wants to gain as much as he can before the dispute ends.
pg 29 line 121-126,
In this quote Othello talks about letting nothing happen to Desdemona if she was to come into war with him. He says that his blood will be shed before any of hers is. He says he will give his life for her love. This quote is signifigant because it shows Othellos true feeling towards his wife Desdemona, a general in his position opening up in a sentemental way to a woman is truly amazing.
pg.29 line 122 to 126.
This quote shows that Othello loves Desdemona. Othello is not afraid to tell Desdemona's father the truth. He is also not afraid to take the punishmennt from the court.
"Even now, now an old black ram is tupping your white ewe...or else the devil will make a grandsire out of you."
This reveals that Iago is the kind of person who tells it like it is. He doesn't care to put it kindly that Brabantio's daughter is having sex with Othello. Also, this reveals that Iago is racist towards Othello and wants to put what he is saying in the most offensive way possible. Iago's description of Othello is not only offensive to Othello but to Brabantio as well. Comparing Othello to the devil and then telling that Brabantio's daughter is having relations with him reveals that Iago is not a very empathetic person. In fact, Iago is selfish in that he did not care who he offended. All that he was thinking of was himself, and doing what was right for himself.
"I do beseech you,
Send for the lady to the Sagittary,
And let her speak of me before her father:
If you do find me foul in her report,
The trust, the office I do hold of you,
Not only take away, but let your sentence
Even fall upon my life." this chrachterizes Othello's chrachter perfectly because it show his compassion, bravery and loyalty which is what Othello is all about.
this was when Othello was talking to the judge telling him that their marriage was in no case forced. he is not scared because he know how strong their love is and if it turn out that she betrays him he is not scared to die for her. This also shows how confident Othello is by saying that they kill him if they find out that their marriage is forced.
Othello is all about compassion, courage, and loyalty and that is what the passage is showing.
"Yet, by your gracious patience,
I will a round unvarnish'd tale deliver
Of my whole course of love; what drugs, what charms,
What conjuration and what mighty magic,
For such proceeding I am charged withal,
I won his daughter."
This quote shows that Othello, while he is obviously angry that he has been accused of tricking Desdemona into marrying him, is polite enough to show respect to the senators and the Duke of Venice. Othello is a respectful man, and while being snide in his lead into his speech, is still trying to be as respectful as he can to the noblemen. Othello knows that he will come against prejudice in Italy because of his differences to the Italians, but he still overcomes them and shows respect to those who are of higher rank than he.
Though in the trade of war I have slain men, Yet do I hold it very stuff o'the conscience
To do no contrived murder. I lack iniquity
Sometimes to do me service. Nine or ten times I had thought to have yerked him here, under the ribs.
This quote from Iago shows that he does not believe in murder, and has good morals. He thinks only to kill someone if it is for a just reason, like in battle. It is rather ironic however, for Iago says how he believes in being a good person while he is going behind Othello's back and trying to steal Desdemona away from him for his friend Roderigo.
"Thus do I ever make my fool my purse;
For I mine own gained knowledge should profane
If I would time expend with such a snipe
But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor"
This quote reveals Iago's greed and selfishness. He isn't helping Rodrigo because he is his friend. He is helping Rodrigo because it will benefit himself. Iago will be payed money and he might be able to ruin Othello's life and then rise to power. Iago is taking advantage of a weak Rodrigo, and is only looking out for himself.
page 53 lines 407-415. Describes Iago's character much more and also shows a few of his goals. For one he describes his deep hatred for Othello for not promoting him, but also that he is very cunning and deceiving. He uses Roderigo's stupidity and "love" for Desdemona to get his money.
